you knew it was coming...

when my mom was growing up in Cairo in the 50's, the pyramids were still in the desert. the city has grown exponentially since then, and it has crept up to their very doorstep. urban neighborhoods stretch along two sides of the site, and you'll find a fleet of tour buses parked at the foot of Cheops' pyramid. and you can't climb them like you could in my mom's day. development definitely comes with a price. that being said, they still have the power to capture your imagination if you let them.

Last time I climbed Cheops was in January of 1973. Weren't supposed to be able to but we found a guide and some E-pounds under the table. Very early in the morning & watched the sunrise. BTW sunrise and sunset is the best time of day to get really great pictures with out a filter on the lense of the camera. The sun overpowers the rest of the day. I am so glad you are beginning to experience Egypt. Get out into the hinterland when you feel more acclimated and at ease with your surroundings. It will be worth the effort. Really.

They were beautiful and mysterious surrounded by desert, by huge space. How sad. Now they seem more like piles of rock. Like a gorgeous picture with too small a frame.
